Disease Outbreak

Article Posted on: 11/21/08

A neurologic form of Equine Herpes Virus 1 has become more prevelent.  While this is not a new disease, it often causes panic in the horse world due to the fact that it is hard to diagnose quickly and usually a few animals die before it is recognized.  The symptoms begin with a high fever, but quickly move on to ataxia (staggering) and hind leg paralysis.  While this is a virus that we do vaccinate for (Rhino), this strain does not respond to the vaccine.  The vaccine does not seem to protect the horse from this strain.  It is spread by nose to nose contact as well as in the air in close proximity to the affected animal.  It can make its way down the aisleway of the barn.  A good place to get the latest information is to go to theHorse.com.
